The collec-tion since its first formation has been enlarged by the additionof the pictures, bronzes, and marbles belonging to the late SirJames Erskine of Torrie, who bequeathed them to the Collegeat Edinburgh, for the purpose of laying a foundatioti for agallery for the encouragement of the fine arts ; and in the year1845, with the consent of the Senatus Academicus, an agree-ment was entered into between the trustees of Sir JamesErskines will and the Board of Trustees for Manufactures,that the collection should be placed in the Royal Institution forpublic exhibition, where it passes under the name of TheTorrie Collection. The whole of the collections are increased. The galleries are opened gratuitously to thepublic ; the statue gallery for five days in the week, and thepicture gallery for two.
