Looking down on to a vortex in water, Alnwick Castle Gardens, Alnwick Castle, Alnwick, Northumberland, England, UK.

One of the sculpural water features in the gardens. The two water inlets which cause the water to spin, as well as the central outlet can be clearly seen at the base of the circular tank. The castle was originally one of several 12 th century strongholds set up to guard against the Scots, with Norman barons named de Vesci being its first owners. In 1309 it became the property of Henry, the first Lord Percy. The first Duke of Northumberland transformed what was left of the original Norman castle and subsequent medieval additions into a palace in the mid 18 th century. This was further repeated in the Victorian era by the fourth Duke. The gardens were created at the end of 20 th century
