Gravedona, Lake Como, Lombardy, Italy: a soul judged to have led a virtuous earthly life, a member of the Blessed, Chosen or Saved, is dressed in preparation for eternity in Heaven in this detail of the early-14th century Giudizio Universale (Universal Judgement or Last / Final Judgement) fresco in the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Tiglio, a 12th century Romanesque former baptistery on the northwest shores of the Lago di Como. Once fully clothed, the soul will find itself in an eternal version of Gravedona, depicted below this scene as a Heavenly or Celestial Jerusalem. The lakeside town, long known as ‘the place of a hundred churches’ is painted complete with several towers, including the original campanile or bell tower of Santa Maria del Tiglio as well as the tower of the Abbazia di Piona or Piona Abbey, a former Benedictine monastic complex at Colico on the other side of Lake Como. The Universal Judgement painting is the oldest fresco in the church. It is Lombardic in style and shows the influence of the Florentine painter known as Giotto (Giotto di Bondone, 1267-1337). It has been dated to the early 1300s and may well have been painted by a pupil or follower of Giotto during his lifetime.
