Horse Island (Eilean nan Each) on the Isle of Muck in the Inner Hebrides Scotland

This small island is only accessible on the lowest of tides and is home to a variety of nesting seabirds including puffins. the maritime grassland is rich in plant species especially those that tolerate salt spray which cover the island during storms. After the flowering plants have set seed and the chicks have fledged at the end of the summer about 60 Hoggs (weaned lambs) are driven over the narrow causeway at low tide in September. These sheep remain on Horse Island for their first winter and graze down the long grass and roughage until mid April until they return to Muck. The island is then kept stock free for the summer to allow the flowers to flourish and the birds to remain undisturbed.
