A greatly enlarged portrait of Lord George Sanger's who owned the 'Royal' Circus . Sanger (1825-1911) adopted the title Lord but was only an English showman & circus proprietor, son of a showman father. Sanger grew up working in travelling peep shows and later successfully ran pantomimes, shows/circuses throughout the 1800's with his brother John, having previously has a travelling conjuring show with John & another brother William. In 1871, the Sanger brothers bought Astley's Amphitheatre. George retired in 1905 but was murdered with a hatchet by a disgruntled employee in 1911.
