A black headed gull preparing to land on the water, open winged.
The black headed gull, Latin name Larus Ridibundus, is very prevalent in the UK and Ireland. Measuring approximately 35-38 centimeters in length. The bird is easily recognisable in flight by a white leading edge to the wing. The adult has a grey back and wings and reddish brown legs. As the name suggests the gull has a black head. This example of the species was photographed at Wastwater, Cumbria, United Kingdom
