Was a wealthy land-owner, whose mansion stood afew yards Irom the beach and no? more than a milefrom Fort Walker, erected on the Hilton Head side ofPort Royal entrance, to oppo-^e the Federal naval ex-pedition of 1861. As was in commandof the fort with 625 men under him. After a bombard-ment of four hours on the 7th he bad to evacuate thefort, which was occupied hy Gen. Wrights brigad-- themext day.
