Thesubstance of the purfling is a little thicker and isinserted with much more precision. The sound-holesare more graceful and truer in curve and cutting,though still preserving an originality of character (Fig. 2,PL IV.) ; while the head is much more symmetrical andis better cut. The wood of the instruments of this period is rarelycut on the slab, the bellies never so ; and although themaple is not so handsomely figured, the quality otherwiseof the whole of the material is as fi
