It is only their excessiveinfluence that produces worthless, miserable, morbid constitution marked by this development is indolent, relaxa-tive and an easy prey to epidemics. This temperament is alsocharacterized by a low grade of vitality or resistance. Whenlife is sustained by the volitive powers, it is distinguished by asoftness of the bodily structures, and the prevalence of lymi) fact that all the organic functions are performed indolently, indicates lack of vital power. An excellent illustration of thistemperament is fonnd in Fig. 80 which represents a Chinesegentleman of distinction. In the lower order of animals, as in Fiff. sponges, absorption is performed l)y contiguous cells, which arcquite as effortless as in plants. Because of their organic indo-lence, spongers are often classed as vegetable^. A body havingan atonic or a lymphatic temperament is abundantly supplied 156 COAIMON SENSE MEDICAL ADTISER, with absorbant organs, which are veiy sluggish in their lower animals, life is diffused throughout their structures. Soin the lymphatic temperament, there seems to be less construc-tive energy, slower elaboration, and gi-eater frugality. Lymphis a colorless or yellow fluid containing a large proportion ofwater. It is not so highly organized as blood, but resemblesit, when that fluid is deprived of its red corpuscles. In thesanguine temperament, the blood-vessels are the most diligent, the lacteals next, and the lymphatics the least so, but in thelymphatic temperament, the order of this activity is reversed.
