Coumarin molecule. Molecular model of the plant toxin coumarin. This organic chemical is a benzopyrone and is best known for its sweet smell, which is similar to newly-mown hay, and has been used in perfumes since 1882. It is found in high concentrations in the tonka bean, vanilla grass, woodruff, mullein, and bison grass. It also has clinical medical value as the precursor for several anticoagulants, such as warfarin. Atoms are represented as spheres and are colour coded: carbon (grey, large) hydrogen (light grey, small) and oxygen (red).
