Mandalay to Pyin Oo Lwin train crossing the Gok Hteik Viaduct

The highlight of the Mandalay to Pyin Oo Lwin train trip is the famous Gok Hteik Viaduct, which spans a gorge around 1000 feet deep. The viaduct was constructed in just nine months, and at the time of construction was the 2nd longest bridge in the world. It was renovated in 1951 to repair WWII bombing, and renovated again in the 90’s. It is again in desperate need of repair and the train currently takes 20 minutes to cross in an attempt to minimize further damage (and the train plunging into the gorge). Note the rust on the track bed. With no protection on either side, as seen in this shot, for many it is nothing short of terrifying! A man is leaning out of the train window.
