Aluch, hoAvever, depends upon the ma- turity and vigor of the rhizome. Usualh' Avhen a rhizome is suf- ficienth' mature to produce a l:>loom-bud, branch-buds also start and the}' attain considerable size b}- the time the stalk flowers. (Fig. X, page 116.)
