Familiar sights in the hillsare the coolies with baskets of slips setting outplants wherever unemployed spaces may be found, and groups of Tamil girls plucking buds andyoung leaves from mature bushes. These girlsare happy countenanced, some slender and grace-ful in carriage and movement, and none expressobjection to being snapshotted by travelers. Thegirls baskets are emptied and contents systemati-cally sorted at convenient places in the field, or atthe factory. Essential to every important estateis the factory, for there the leaves are withered, broken by rolling, fermented, fired, and finallysifted into grades preparatory to packing in lead-lined boxes ready to be despatched to the marketsof the universe. It is reassuring to witness the system and scru-pulous cleanliness of every step employed in pro-ducing Ceylon tea. Anybo
