Gilbert, according to the then custom, shared with his brother the lordship of Galloway and the attended William the Lion in his invasion ofNorthumberland in 1174, when that monarch wastaken prisoner. Galloway then broke into rebellion,many subjects of Scotland were murdered, the Kingsofficers expelled, and the castlesâwhich had butrecently been built to protect themâthrown brothers then quarrelled as to their respectivejurisdictions, and Gilbert, by the agency of hisson Malcolm, perhaps illegitimate, slew his brother. Gilbert offered to pay the EnglishKing a yearly tribute of 2000 merks silver, 500cows and 500 swine, but Henry ii., on account ofthe murder of Uchtred, refused both homage andtribute.^ In 1175, William of Scotland being restoredto liberty, marched an army into Galloway tochastise Gilbert, but instead of executing justice,contented himself with exacting a pecuniary satis-faction. In 1176, Gilbert came to York with William,and was received by Henry. There he left his sonDuncan as hostage for his friendship, and in 1180 hewas charged in the English Exchequer with the thenenormous sum of £919, 9s. In 1184, he is foundunder the protection of
