The zeal for education has been a part of the gen-eral quickening of the nation that the last few yearshave witnessed, and has met with the approval andencouragement of His Majesty the King and of allin high places. The first-fruits of this zeal wasthe establishment of an Education at first as a separate department, it wasafterwards enlarged into a Ministry of Public In-struction, taking cognizance of education in general,ecclesiastical matters, the superintendence and up-keep of hospitals, and text-book compilation. Inthis form the Department of Education has had. Q Education 205 an existence of about fourteen years. At certainperiods of its history it cannot, perhaps, be said tohave been particularly active, but of its progress inthe last few years there can be no question. The work of education is always gradual, and it isimpossible to point to immediate results such as canbe produced by effort directed in most other ways,but there are already many tangible evidences of thework done. Primary schools have been established in everypart of the capital and are attended by ten thousandscholars. In these a four-years course of instructionis given in the ordinary subjects, much the same asin all primary schools the world over. After com-pleting this course the scholar who wishes to con-tinue his studies may enter one of the secondaryschools. Here, in addition to the ordinary subjects,instruction is given in English, higher mathematics,practical geometry, and the knowledge of Pali termsand words necessary to the correct writin
