This proceeding was repeated twice a day and under thespray, for the first three days, the object being to allow thegreatly distended uterus full opportunity to contract. Somebloody fluid escaped for the first two days ; but by the fifthday all discharge had ceased and the girl could pass waterwithout assistance. There was scarcely a rise of tempe-rature after the operation (fig. 50), and no trouble of any cases have hitherto caused great anxiety to thesurgeon from the rapid decomposition so liable to occur onopening the accumulation. Many fatal results have , however, decomposition be prevented during the first fewdays, and the uterus permitted to resume its normal size, thesubsequent risks become very slight indeed.
