Opposite the Florence Duomo stands the Baptistry. It is crowned by a magnificent mosaic ceiling.
The octagonal Baptistry stands in both the Piazza del Duomo and the Piazza di San Giovanni, across from the Duomo cathedral and the Giotto bell tower (Campanile di Giotto). It is crowned by a magnificent mosaic earliest mosaics date from1225. The covering of the ceiling started under the direction of the Franciscan friar Jacopo Torrita and not completed until the fourteenth century
