Thecapital invested at the present time is far greater than indicatedfor 1909 and the number of employes has probably increased atleast 40 per cent. Reports of the State Bureau of Inspection forthe year ending September 30, 1913, indicate 5,764 employes inthe Hammond establishments, and it is probable that this reportdid not include all establishments. Comparative reports from other cities showing the occu-pations of the fathers of the 13 and 14 year old children indicatethat in Hammond, 61 per cent, were engaged in manufacturingestablishments as compared with 58 per cent, in South Bend (1) ;46 per cent, in Evansville (1) ; 45 per cent, in Richmond, Vir-ginia (2); 38 per cent, in Springfield, Illinois (3) ; and 25 percent, in New Orleans (4).
