An early photo of the paddle steamer BILSDALE sailing up the river Esk past Tate Hill Sands, with Whitby Abbey & the Parsh Church above the east side of the town. Built in 1900 for the Great Yarmouth Steam Tug Company she ran local trips from Yarmouth and Lowestoft as 'Lord Roberts', then became part of Cosens of Weymouth fleet in 1912. After the war she was bought by the Furness Shipbuilding Company for shipyard work at Haverton Hill (on the Tees). In 1925 the Crosthwaite Steamship Company of Middlesbrough renamed her Bilsdale, basing her at last tourist trip was in 1934.
