. The American annual of photography. be done with a very ordinary outfitthan to attain any degree of mathematical accuracy. In this article it has been my aim to treat lensless photog-raphy from the point of view of architecture, but the methodhas unlimited application in every branch of our art where theeffect desired is of a pictorial nature. Of course one cannotdo speed work, night, or flashlight photography without alens; but there are other large fields where the results are emi-nently satisfactory. I will close with a quotation from the Rev. J. B. Thompson, one of the pioneers of the method. He says, in a goodneedlehole photograph it is not too much to say that we havean effect much nearer to nature. If we have not every objectfar and near presented with the same minuteness of detail thatwe mentally know the objects to possess, we have much morenearly the vision which actually meets the eye. We haveatmosphere and the right impression of distance. And, whatis still more important, we have what we may call plastic 224. quality, that quality which makes objects stand out bodily andnot merely appear on the flat. The picture suggests muchmore to us just because it does not pointedly express every-thing, and we can look at it again and again with the feelingthat we have not seen all that is in it.
