Mineralogy photomicrograph of Dunite, New Zealand. Cross polarized slide section

Mineralogy photomicrograph of Dunite, New Zealand. Cross polarized slide section showing Olivine with accessory phlogopite (mica), chromite and calcite. The rock is composed almost entirely of olivine and is a typical dunite (an almost monomineralic olivine composition). The best dunites come from Mt. St. Dun in New Zealand. The differing interference colours are due to different orientation of the olivine crystals.
