Museum 6 – This is a New York State issued Civil War uniform worn by Henry Adsit, a member of the 44th New York Volunteer Infantry. The unit was known as the “Ellsworth Avengers”. Elmer Ellsworth was a union Army officer from Mechanicville New York who was a friend of Abram Lincoln’s and was killed by a Virginia tavern keeper after he hauled down a Confederate Flag that was flying from a building in Alexandria Virginia. The Ellsworth Avengers were recruited in Albany by an associated formed to keep Ellsworth’s name alive. The uniform coat was purchased by New York State early in the civil war

During the Civil War states were responsible for arming and equipping the Soldiers they recruited. Early in the war uniforms were not yet standardized. The coat is unusual because of the single pocket in front.
