Added to his other duties he began the studyof medicine in all its branches, and continued it for several years afteruntil he was qualified for, and if occasion had required, could haveentered upon professional service. Finishing his engagement atBoston, he engaged as clerk to Luther Angier, postmaster and druggistat Medford, Mass., with the agreement that with proper notice, hecould leave to engage in business for himself. Early in the summer of1845, Mr. White believed that that time had arrived. He had nevervisited Nashua, N. H., but had heard of its reputation as a growing. JOHN WHITE. 369 manufacturing town. A few hours inspection settled the question, andbefore leaving, he hired the store which he afterwards occupied fornearly thirty years, as an apothecary. He was never idle. No manwas more thorough and painstaking in the discharge of obligations tohis customers. In many of the business enterprises of Nashua, took an active and in some of them a prominent part, engagingin the transportation and sale of coal on his arrival ; he has alwaysbeen the leading dealer in the trade. After the close of the war heoriginated the project of and gave his attention to the construction ofthe large blocks of stores on Main street, known as the MerchantsExchange, retaining for himself and son, the corner store.
