Captains of the Stone Fleet

The Stone Fleet sailed from New Bedford harbor on November 16, 1861. To stop the blockade runners in and out of the Southern ports at the beginning of the Civil War, the Navy Department decided to sink ships laden with stones in the narrow channels. New Bedford, Massachusetts, furnished 24 of the 45 vessels sought by the government. The men pictured in this photograph dating to that period. were captains of the Stone Fleet vessels. These ships were mostly whalers and already had been in use many years.
