They are much like commonnettles in appearance, and some of thespecies are furnished with stings, butthey may be readily distinguished fromthem by their alternate (not opposite)leaves, as well as by the narrow bifidstipules which accompany them. Fromother allied genera they differ in theirlittle, oblong or rounded and compressedachenes having concave depressions onboth surfaces. [A. A. B.] FLEXUOSE. The capsule is woody, oblong,obtuse, five-valved, the exterior thickly-covered with sharp-pointed tubercles. Theyare lofty trees, having alternate pinnateleaves; found in New South Wales andthe Moluccas. The natives of these islandsuse the rough tuberculated fruit as raspsin preparing roots &c. for food.
