He was mayor of the city of Dead-wood for thirteen years—a very remarkable _career in a western city. It is doubtful if aparallel can be found in the history of theNorthwest. It is likewise strong testimonyto his executive ability and integrity. Hewas chairman of the first state Republicanconvention, when the state of South Dakotawas admitted into the Inion. He was alsostate auditor of South Dakota. In 1898he was elected clerk of the circuit andcounty courts of Lawrence county, S. Heis a member of the Masonic order in whichhe has reached the thirty-second dejj, is also a Knight of Pythias and amember of the order of Red Men, as wellas a member of the Ancient Order ofUnited Workmen. This brief epitome ofMr. Stars career gives only a meager ideaof his strong personality, which has drawnto him in close friendship more associatesthan it is the good fortune of many men toenjoy.
