The millions of applications for social security account numbers are handled in orderly manner in the Social Security Board Records Office. After the hour and date, and the number of each application has been recorded, as it is received, applications are sent to 'holding files.' Here they are held until they have been grouped into blocks of 1,000 with numbers running in sequence--for example, from 001-01-1000 to 001-01-1999.
