I., 1885-87 ; U. S. Senator since 1894. GEORGE PEABODY VVETMORE, States-man, Senator in Congress from RhodeIsland, was born in London, England, during avisit of his parents abroad, August 2, 1846. Hisparents were William Shepard and Austiss Derby(Rogers) Wetmore. He is descended in the pater-nal line from Thomas Whitmore, who came fromEngland in 1635 and was one of the original paten-tees of Middletown, Connecticut. Many of thefamily were prominent in the public life of the. GEO. PEABODY WPnMORE in 1888, but declined. Senator Wetmore has al-ways been a stanch Republican in politics, and hasfor many years taken an active interest in partyaffairs. He headed the electoral ticket of his Statein the Presidential elections of 1880 and 1884, andserved on several public committees during thisperiod. In 1885 he was elected Governor of theState and was re-elected the following year, but de-feated in 1887, though receiving a larger number ofvotes than at either of the two preceding 1889 he was a candidate for the United StatesSenate, and though not successful at that time, waselected in 1894, receiving the unanimous vote ofthe General Assembly of Rhode Island in both sep-arate and joint session.
