There is little doubtthat Jung Bahadur is the most remarkableindividual the State has ever produced. Forover thirty years—from 1846, when he becamePrime Minister, until he died in 1877—he wasin every sense the special head of all theland. The life of Jung Bahadur was full ofincident, and he proclaimed his strong person-ality in every action. Added to this, legends. JUNG BAHADUR AND THE INDIAN MUTINY 27 and traditions are already gathering aroundhis memory, and there is every indication thathe will be regarded by posterity as the Rustum of the nineteenth century. Hisattitude during the mutiny of the nativetroops in Hindustan was characteristic of theman. When the news reached Nepal, in spiteof great opposition, he stood firm as a friendof the British. He at once sent off fourthousand troops, and some time afterwardsJung himself followed with a much largerforce, including artillerymen and rendered good service against themutineers, and the State was rewarded forthis action with, besides other substantialhonours, a large portion of the Terai beingrestored to Nepal. From this time the history of the countryhas been a record of prosperity, and of con-tinued friendly relations with the BritishGovernment.
