Maneless adult male lion (Panthera leo). Lions in the dry areas of Kenya, such as Samburu and Tsavo, are often maneless as they have hunt more

In drier areas it is often necessary for pride males to take a greater role in hunting, due to the relative scarcity of game. Pressure from competing males is also reduced as lions themselves are also relatively scarce. A large mane is not helpful in a hunt, and therefore there is selective pressure in dry areas towards the reduction or elimination of the mane.
