The Violet Sabrewing Hummingbird, Campylopterus hemileucurus, is a very large hummingbird native to southern Mexico and Central America as far south as Costa Rica and western Panama. It is an important pollinator of heliconias and bananas. Photographed in Costa Rica with multiple high-speed flashes to freeze the motion in mid-flight.
