Following are some shop kinks which were recentlyinaugurated. SHOP PRACTICE DATA DIAGRAMS^ The chart shown in Fig. 1 is used for recording the variousdimensions between the driving wheels, hubs, etc. The machinist driven by the small pinion T, which is fastened on a sleeve run-ning loose on the shaft A. This sleeve is driven by either of thegears A^^ P or R, which may be connected to it by frictionclutches, the gears running loose on this sleeve. These gears arein turn driven by the gears H, K and M, respectively, they beingrigidly fixed to the intermediate shaft, which is driven by thegear G. This gear meshes with the gear F, which is fastened tothe sleeve with gear E. This sleeve is in turn driven by the L K M I^ O w r\ vy. Fig. 4—Automatic Feed Attachment for Quartering Machine. who does the work on the driving boxes gets the width betweeneach pair of driving wheels, placing this dimension on the cardat A. The machinist who lays off the shoes and wedges fills inthe dimension B. The lateral play is given by the foreman, andthe machinist who works on the boxes calculates the size of theflange he needs on the box and enters it at D. The diagram of the pedestal brace. Fig. 2, is filled out for theblacksmith, giving him the information that he needs to repair gear D, which is rigidly connected to the gear C, which is drivenby gear B, which is keyed to shaft A. The friction clutches X,Fig. 3, are thrown in by levers A and B, which are connectedso that one must be in a neutral position while the other is inuse. When the lever A throws the clutch into the gear N afeed of .017 in. is obtained, and when thrown into P the feed in. Lever B thrown into the gear R will give a feed
