A Captain's / Master's certificate of competence issued in 1862 under the British Merchant Shipping Act of 1854 (given under the seal of the Board of the British Merchant Navy a master mariner who has sailed in command of an ocean-going merchant ship will be titled captain. A professional seafarer who holds a restricted or limited master's certificate but who has sailed in command of a ship may be called captain.
