Diabetes affects blood glucose levels. If they are too High damage can occur. Insulin regulates these levels Normally. About 17 million americans have diabetes but 5 million dont know it. The disease is caused when a person loses the ability to process glucose in their body because they do not manufacture insulin. As a result the glucose builds up to dangerous levels and coma can occur. Insulin needs to be administered for the rest of the patients life.
