Hedoes this because he knows that when the wintercomes and snow covers the ground he wouldnt be•able to find any nuts, and nuts are what squirrels liketo eat—so by hiding them away in his home andother holes he can dig down under the snow and have a gooddinner whenever he is hungry later THE WISHING-FAIRYS ANIMAL FRIENDS Part of the winter he plays around in the snow and partof the time he curls up in his snug little home, which is adeep comfortable hole in a tree, and he has a long, longsleep. When he wakes up the sun is shining, and it is niceand warm and he is always very hungry. Then he is gladthat he was so careful and hid the nuts away; for there theyare and he has all he wants to eat. The Squirrel looks very much like his cousin the Rat; buthis fur is a prettier color. The fur on his stomach is white;and the Rats is not. The fur on the Ratsstomach is the same color as the fur on his back. It was a very cold day, and the squirrel washiding in a tree behind a big branch. He wasshivering and trying to get out of the wind. He had heard the other animals talking aboutthe Wishing-Fairy, and he thought he would like to go to herand ask her if she could do anything to keep his back only trouble was that he did not know where she lived.
