An illustration of wet age-related macular degeneration, a medical condition in which damage to the retina leads to progressive vision loss in one's central field of vision. The macula is a region near the center of the retina with a high density of photoreceptors responsible for high acuity vision. In wet AMD, blood vessels from the choroid undergo angiogenesis, resulting in abnormal blood vessel growth. Excess blood and fluid proteins leak into the retina and irreversibly damage or displace photoreceptors, resulting in vision loss.
