On this announcement the shrieks and agoniz-ing cries of the women were heart-rending, all call-ing for their husbands, fathers, brothers, and soon, rushing wildly into their arms and faintingwith excess of feeling. When the natural ex-citement and confusion to some extent had been al-layed, the full extent of the disaster, now a matterof history, was discovered, and the hour of joysand hopes closed in a day of national gloom andmourning.
