By far the cheapest plan,in the long run, is to put the work into the hands of somesmall, yet reliable, engineering firm or machine-tool makers. Before going on to describe our gear, we may state that asimilar one to that here shown has stood the test of sevenseasons wear, and is now as good as when first made, answer-ing its purpose perfectly. The working is thus :—On recoil theforespring contracts. The pressure of the recoil is taken upon RECOIL GEARING FOR PUNT-GUNS 191 the trunnions, which force the holding bracket with a down-ward thrust on to the bed-plate of the gear, owing to the work-ing axis lying above and in front of the bearing surface of thebracket. The rebound of the recoil spring is checked by theafter-spring or *back check. The material recommended is wrought or forged steel forall parts. The bracket may be a steel casting, and the bed-plate and pivot socket of brass, if thought better. Reference.
