The pressure of the recoil is taken upon RECOIL GEARING FOR PUNT-GUNS 191 the trunnions, which force the holding bracket with a down-ward thrust on to the bed-plate of the gear, owing to the work-ing axis lying above and in front of the bearing surface of thebracket. The rebound of the recoil spring is checked by theafter-spring or *back check. The material recommended is wrought or forged steel forall parts. The bracket may be a steel casting, and the bed-plate and pivot socket of brass, if thought better. Reference.
