An old engraving of horse-drawn sleds used to carry passengers and goods in the mid-1800s on the zig-zag overground route over Mont Cenis before the arrival of the railway tunnel, which then meant the journey could be taken underground through the Alps. It is from a Victorian book of the 1890s on discoveries and inventions during the 1800s. The construction of the Mount Cenis Tunnel or Fréjus Rail Tunnel through the Alps between France and Italy opened in 1871. The tunnel remains an important link in the connection between Rome and Paris, via Turin and Chambéry.
