The earth is split by a score oftransverse ravines, which extend like blue veins from the mainartery and map the face of the country with shadow; isolatedcolumns, positive and brilliant in color, stand alone in theirchromatic glory without a visible connection with the main rockfrom which they were originally detached ; odd groups of con-glomerate, much like inverted wineglasses in shape, and plainly banded with several strata of color, sprout out like so many petrified mushrooms; and, clasping allwithin their basin, are the circling mountains of the Wahsatch and Uintah ranges—silvered withperpetual snow on their acute peaks, and impenetrably blue where the pines are. These two chainsare among the most picturesque of all the Western mountains. T
