Ripon Cathedral, North-West view

The early history of Ripon Cathedral begins with the foundation of a monastery on the site by St Wilfrid of Lindisfarne in the seventh century but this building was destroyed by King Eadred in the year 948. The reconstructed monastery was destroyed again, this time by the Normans but rose yet again under Norman rule with Archbishop Thomas de Bayeux of York initiating the construction and Archbishop Roger of York taking it forward. Various phases of construction continued well into the 16th century and in 1836 the church became the cathedral church of the newly formed Diocese of Ripon. The picture was drawn by C. Warren and engraved by Benjamin Wilkes.
