Night view from the beach south of the Central Pier. The Central Pier dates to 1864, the year after the more genteel North Pier. In 1990 the pier was strengthened, at a cost of £75,000, to take the weight of the 32m (108ft) tall 'Big Wheel'. Blackpool Tower has computer-controlled changing lights during the 2014 Illuminations, here green and red.
