Dairy cattle farming. Holstein cattle feeding (far left) and resting in sandbed cubicles in an open-sided shed on a dairy farm. The shed's open design and cubicles were chosen to aid ventilation and provide for the welfare of the herd. This breed of the domesticated cow (Bos primigenius taurus) is farmed for its milk. It is usually black and white, but the individual in the foreground is brown and white instead. This is the Rerrick Park dairy farm, Kirkcudbright, Galloway, Scotland. This farm is operated by Fergus McDowall, finalist in the 'Dairy Farmer of the Year' category in the 2011 Farmers Weekly Awards.
