Theformer laid down only general principles of government anddid not go into details. The government it provided forMissouri was similar to our present state government exceptthat the judges and a number of officials were to be appointedinstead of elected and that the legislature had more total cost of this constitution, including pay of the dele-gates, was only $8,000. Among them were men who became United Statessenators, governors, and state supreme court judges. Thepresident of the convention was David Barton, an able lawyerand orator. He was one of Missouris first United Statessenators. Other men who became well known and who didmost to frame the constitution were John Rice Jones, DuffGreen, Edward Bates, Henry Dodge, John D. Cook, JonathanS. Findlay, Alexander McNair, and John Scott. The First State Election, August 1820 After the constitution was adopted, an election wasordered for electing a congressman, governor, lieutenantgovernor, state senators, and representatives.
