The Army of the Potomac then recrossed to thenorth side of the Rappahannock river, where it remained until May of the next year, Shermans Unsuccessful Attack on Vicksburg.—In the htter part *December, 1862, a large National force, under General William Sherman,made an attack on the city of Vicksburg, in Mississippi, on the Mississippi river:but was repulsed after severe fighting.
