On account of exposure in the army, the remotecause of a nervous form of disease gained entranceinto his system and eventually developed paraplegia,affecting his lower extremities, which, while it lefthis body in comparative health, deprived him of loco-motion except by the aid of crutches. While he wasgenerally hopeful of ultimate recovery, this myste-rious disease pursued him, without once relaxing itsstealthy hold, to the close of his life, March iS,i860, over nine months before the expiration of hi,gubernatorial term, at the early age of 48 years.
