Excepting the Emery machine, which is the most ingenious and accurate that has been in- (vented for the weighing of heavy loads, hy- jdraulic machines are not much used at the pres- ]ent time. Their disadvantages are due to the difficulty of keeping the press filled with a suit- able liquid, the difficulty of keeping the packing iof the plungers in good order, and the intermit-tent application of the load by the strokes ofthe pump. In both types the load is applied in such away that it acts through some form of weighingmachine which enables the operator to determineinstantly the weight of the load or the amountof the force being applied. The general construction of the screw ma-chine is shown by the accompanying illustrationof the Riehle machine, which may be readilyused to subject a suitable specimen to any one ofthe three classes of strains—-direct tension, di-rect compression, and the transverse or bending,so that the weight of the load can be Riehle Testing Macliine. Referring to the illustration, the operation ofthe machine may be described as follows: Thesliding head (a) may be moved up or down bythe two screws (bb) which are operated bypower derived from any convenient source andtransmitted by belts on the pulleys (cc). Thesepulleys are loose on their shafts, and being pro-vided with a cross belt on one and an open belton the other, rotate in opposite directions. The TESTUDO — TETRACHORD lever (d) actuates friction clutclics which con-nect either of the pulleys with its shaft, so thatthe motion is communicated to the screws bygearing and thus raises or lowers the slidinghead (a). By using the lever (e) and the handwheel (f), the gears may be so combined as togive various speeds to the sliding head (a) asmay be required in different classes of stationary h
