Designated a Site of Special Scientific Interest by Natural England. The Newport Canal started at Norbury junction where it connected to the Shropshire Union Canal, but the series of 17 locks between the two have been disused. The Shrewsbury and Newport Canals Trust are aiming to restore this section to the main canal system.
