Time and Tide Bell. Stone Jetty, Morecambe, Lancashire, England, United Kingdom, Europe.
The Morecambe Bay Time and Tide Bell, installed on Friday 8th March 2019, is an art installation suspended over the sea from the Stone Jetty off the Promenade. It is one of a national programme of tidal bells in British coastal waters designed by the international artist Marcus Vergette. Developed to draw public attention to the threat of climate change a clapper hanging down into the sea causes the bell to toll as the tides rise and fall. This new bell form was designed in collaboration with Dr Neil Mclachlan (University of Melbourne, Australia). Uniquely, from one strike it sounds different notes one after another as a melody. This form has never existed before and has only been possible as a result of recent developments in computer modeling. The bell is cast bronze and over the years will be turned green, or other colours, depending on local contaminants, by the sea, but will not degrade.
