This is an or-ganization of Broad-way and Hollywoodmotion picture producers who are tryingto discover new talent. Besides bringing him to the attentionof the producers, the fellowship will giveMr. Coutts the opportunity to writeplaj^s for a year without the necessityof teaching or directing in order to payexpenses. He may, and, according to theterms of the fellowship, he must, devoteall of his time to writing plays. He mustcomplete two full-length plays within. ALAN COUTTSGets years study the year. The Bureau then has firstoption on all of his work. Mr. Coutts and his wife will leave forthe West Coast to gather material inJune when his contract at South Dakotaexpires. They will spend some timethere, and then sail for New York byway of the Panama Canal. The prize-winning play, WharfSong, was Mr. Coutts masters thesisat the Northwestern University school ofspeech. It is a sea play with the scenelaid on the West Coast. The play wasproduced at Northwestern last year. Upon graduation from Oregon Statein 1931, Mr. Coutts became an instruc-tor in dramatics there. A year later hewon the National Playwriting scholar-ship at Northwestern. While at North-western he sold two one-act plays, TheGalley Cat, and Spectre on theDeep to Samuel French—just as thelandlord was about to evict him fornon-pajmaent of rent, he confesses.
